11. Budo, The Art Of Killing (79)

An Artful documentary. This movie should demonstrate that all documentaries don't have to be stuffy cinema-verite stuff. Very informative for anyone interested in Japanese material arts, the various arts are profiled with artistry of a Kurosawa film. Particulary interesting is the entry on Aikido, an art seldom glimpsed in the States except by the initiated. I have been trying to acquire this movie ever since I saw it in my Aikido class nearly 15 years ago.

12. Brutes And Ravages (78)

Stupid travelogue documentary with loads of real life animal killings. This is supposedly Arthur Davis' documented footage of his daring travels around the globe filming rare and bizarre rituals, which usually involve the killing of live animals.

Arthur Davis' is seen as a prat with a moustache. This so fake you won't believe it - apparently Arthur Davis' is told by some Indian tribe he is not allowed to film a turtle wedding, but they crept along anyway to film it, knowing they were putting their lives in danger.

If that were so, then how come we get to see big close-ups of the giant turtle having it's throat cut and the married couple having sex in their hut after? The sex scene itself is so laughable - the couple are really embarrassed and keep laughing at the camera. I felt my cheeks burn with shame as I watched it.

The turtle wedding is fake for sure, and so too is a scene when native boys cross a river and one is eaten by a crocodile. Remember a similar scene in Faces of Death - well, after seeing this films version of events you may well be inclined to believe the F.O.D. sequence is in fact reall!!!

An early scene shows a lama being sacrificed - it's still pumping heart is torn form its chest and it's head is cut off.

This film really is a fiasco and, if I'm thinking of the right film (I may be getting this bit confused with the infinately superior Naked and Cruel) ther is a nasty bit where a leopard is eaten alive by alligators... it has obviously been thrown in to the water by the makers who claim "it got lost and fell in to the water" (they just happened to stumble upon it, right?).

Obviously not a film for animal rights activists, this is for the most part shamefully poor, but I did laugh at ht crocodile scene and ther is some nice scenery. I gave it 4, but I think I may be being kind... I have seen worse

A remake of the 1939 Bob Hope classic, but with the comedic elements removed and the suspense heightened.
